Seminyak is the most polished part of Bali. Boutique hotels, fine dining, designer shopping and beachfront sundowners, mostly within walking distance. The strip along Jalan Kayu Aya (locals call it Eat Street, and it is also signed Jalan Laksmana and Jalan Oberoi, all the same road) is the best walkable stretch in the south.
Where to eat
Merah Putih is the most architecturally spectacular restaurant in Bali, modern Indonesian under a 14-metre bamboo pavilion; book a week ahead for dinner. Sarong does pan-Asian fine dining that has held its standard for over a decade. Mama San is a Southeast Asian canteen with punchy food and excellent cocktails. For a reality check on price, Warung Nia in Kayu Aya Square does proper Balinese nasi campur for IDR 30,000 to 60,000 in the middle of the most expensive street on the island, ideal for lunch before a beach-club afternoon. Made's Warung is a Bali institution; the nasi goreng and chicken satay are the point, not a hidden gem but genuinely good.
Beach clubs
Potato Head in Petitenget is the design icon, an amphitheatre of reclaimed wooden doors facing the sea, expensive but worth seeing for the architecture alone. Ku De Ta is the original Seminyak sunset institution with the best-positioned loungers on the beach. Double Six Rooftop is the most reliably energetic sunset spot.
