Quick Facts

  • Where: Kemenuh village, 20 minutes south-east of central Ubud
  • Entry: Around 15,000 to 25,000 IDR
  • The walk: A long concrete staircase, busy but maintained. The easiest access of any major fall in Bali
  • Swimming: Yes, in the main pool, conditions permitting
  • Drone: Yes, and well. The gorge is spacious enough to fly properly, one of the few falls on this list where aerial work genuinely pays off. Fly early before the crowds fill the frame, and current regulations apply
  • Best window: 7am to 9am, or 4pm to 5.30pm
  • The smart base: Omma Day Club sits directly beside the waterfall stream, with a pool that looks straight at the falls

The Vibe

A genuinely powerful 15-metre curtain of water in a green amphitheatre, wrapped in the most developed waterfall infrastructure on the island: cafes, viewing decks, swing platforms, souvenir stands, and Omma Day Club perched right on the stream. By 10am it's a theme park. At 7.30am it's still a waterfall. The day club is the twist that changes the maths here: swimming in a pool while looking directly at a huge waterfall is a strange and brilliant feeling, the food is genuinely good, and it gets busy for the right reasons.

The Shot

The famous frame is from the upper viewing deck, and it's been copied a hundred thousand times. The better work is at pool level: get low at the water line with a wide lens and let the falls tower. The drone earns its bag space here: the gorge is open enough for proper aerial lines down the river to the falls, flown early. And the Omma pool against the waterfall is a frame in its own right. Late afternoon backlight through the mist gives you something the morning crowd never sees.

Photo tips for Tegenungan

Best timing+

Shoot before 9:00am or after 4:00pm for softer light and fewer harsh shadows. Dry season gives safer trails and cleaner access; rainy season gives more drama but more slippery rock.

Photo spots+

Start with the main viewing platform for the wide establishing frame, then descend the roughly 150 steps for base-of-fall spray and scale. Add the second-level cliff for a higher full-height view, and use the glass bridge for an aerial-style angle without a drone.

Gear note+

Use a polariser for wet-rock glare and stronger greenery. Bring an ND filter and tripod if you want silky water, but keep the setup mobile because the popular angles get busy.

What Recent Visitors Say

The most reviewed waterfall in Bali and the pattern is blunt: loved at opening time, resented by lunch. Praise centres on the easy access, the power of the falls and the facilities. Complaints centre on crowds, the built-up commercial feel, and a sense that the magic has been paved over. The advice repeated across hundreds of reviews is identical: come very early or very late.

Verdict

Tenth, and it's here on merit, not charity. It's the right first waterfall for anyone nervous about steep descents, the only one on this list you can do in an hour from Ubud, and the falls themselves are better than the crowds suggest. Pair it with the day club and it becomes something none of the others offer: a waterfall you can spend a whole comfortable day beside.

Region Note

Ubud pack. Twenty minutes from town. Sunrise add-on before breakfast, or build it into a full Omma day.

Sean's Take

I got some of my favourite drone shots of the trip here; the gorge is spacious and forgiving to fly, which is rare for a Bali waterfall. And here's the hint that saves your legs: Omma Day Club has an elevator. Walk down the steps to the waterfall, spend your time there, then walk into the day club for the restaurant. It's worth the visit on its own, swimming in that pool staring straight at the falls is a beautiful feeling and the food is good. When you're done, take the elevator up to the top car park and skip every one of those steps on the way out.
