- Where: Sekumpul and Lemukih villages, Buleleng, 2 to 2.5 hours north of Ubud
- Entry: The contested number in Bali waterfall travel. Official trek tickets at the genuine village counters have run roughly 125,000 to 200,000 IDR depending on the route, with a cheap viewpoint-only option, while unofficial roadside "registration" checkpoints have pressured visitors into packages of 375,000 IDR and up. Management has changed hands after public scandal and pricing keeps moving, so verify hard before publishing and pay only at the official trailhead counters at Sekumpul or Lemukih
- The walk: A 30 to 45 minute trek including roughly 400 steep steps and a river crossing. Proper shoes, decent fitness
- The guide question: Genuinely useful here, unlike most falls: the trail network is confusing, the river crossing moves, and guiding is one of the few real incomes in this remote valley. Take one at the official counter at the posted rate; refuse the roadside upsell
- Swimming: In the lower pools, conditions permitting; the main impact zones are too powerful
- Drone: Viable from the valley rim, well back from the spray, regulations permitting. Inside the canyon, forget it
- Best window: 7am to 9am for diffused canyon light, which means leaving Ubud by 5am
The Vibe
Six or seven falls, depending on the season, pouring 80 metres off a jungle cliff face into one green canyon. The scale doesn't translate to photographs taken by other people; standing in the spray field at the base, it's simply a different category of waterfall to everything else in this guide. The neighbouring Fiji (Lemukih) falls share the valley and the ticket, and the combined circuit is the best two hours of waterfall walking in Bali.
The Shot
The classic is the full cascade group from the upper viewpoint, framed in jungle. The better one costs you the descent: at the canyon floor, wide and low through the spray, with a figure dwarfed against the falls. Weather-sealing matters, a lens cloth per minute is not a joke, and a 1/4 to 2 second exposure off the tripod turns the multiple streams to silk. ND plus CPL is the working combination if you stay past 9am.

Best timing+
Arrive between 7:00 and 8:00am if you care about clean frames before the bigger tour flow reaches the valley.
Where to shoot+
Use the first reveal from the stairs for scale, then work the base of Sekumpul and the nearby Hidden Waterfall for the stronger landscape set.
Gear note+
Bring water shoes, an umbrella or towel for the camera, and multiple lens cloths. Spray management matters more here than almost anywhere else on the list.
What Recent Visitors Say
Two interleaved stories. The waterfall itself gets described as the most beautiful in Bali and among the best in Asia, fairytale language, five stars, worth every step. The approach gets described in very different language: roadside checkpoints pressuring visitors into overpriced tours, claims that a guide is legally required at rates far above the counter price, and in the worst accounts, visitors followed or hassled for declining. It blew up publicly in late 2023, management changed, and the situation has improved but not vanished. The strategy distilled from hundreds of reviews: navigate to the official Sekumpul parking coordinates without stopping for roadside "registration", pay at the genuine counter, take the legitimate guide, and the day is superb.
Verdict
First, and it isn't close. Every other entry in this guide is a great waterfall; Sekumpul is the reason people get on planes. The gate circus is real and this guide exists partly so it doesn't catch you, because the fix is one paragraph of preparation, and on the other side of it is the best natural sight in Bali.
Region Note
North Bali, anchored from the Ubud pack as a full committed day: depart 5am, Sekumpul and Fiji falls by mid morning, Aling-Aling or the Munduk falls after lunch, home by dark. From Canggu or Seminyak, only with a 4.30am start and a forgiving attitude. Better: build it into an East Bali or Munduk overnight and do it properly.
