The Vibe
Fifty-plus metres of water hitting rock with genuine violence. You hear Nungnung before you see it, and you feel it on your skin from a hundred metres out. The stair count filters the crowd ruthlessly, so even in high season the viewing area holds a fraction of Tegenungan's numbers. This is the raw-power experience the south's manicured falls can't offer.
The Shot
Wide, from inside the spray field, and accept that you'll be wiping the lens every frame; the confined valley means you cannot back up, so 16 to 24mm is the working range. A slow shutter turns the impact zone into smoke. Rainbow conditions appear in the spray on sunny mid mornings. Protect the gear: this is the second-wettest shoot on the list after Sekumpul.

Best timing+
Go early morning for the cleanest scene. Mid-morning can still work because the steep access keeps crowds lighter than the easier Ubud waterfalls.
Where to shoot+
Use the bridge and the large rocks near the base to show scale. Keep distance from the main impact zone; the spray will soak you quickly.
Gear note+
Wide lens, fast shutter options, waterproof cover and lens cloths. Long exposures are possible, but the spray field is aggressive.

The pattern is gloriously consistent: the steps are complained about in the first sentence and forgiven by the third. Reviewers call it the most powerful fall they saw in Bali, praise how few people make the descent, and frame the climb back up as the honest price of admission. The practical consensus: bring water for the stairs, expect to be soaked at the bottom regardless of plans, and skip it entirely if knees or fitness make 500 steps each way a genuine problem.

Second. The best effort-to-reward ratio in Bali waterfall hunting: an hour from Ubud, a modest fee, a leg workout, and in exchange a spectacle that makes half this list feel decorative.
Region Note
Ubud pack, northern run. Pairs with the Bedugul road sights, and with Leke Leke from the cut list if elegant single falls are your thing, or as the muscular half of a day that ends at Banyumala. From Canggu, it's the one northern fall that's semi-plausible as a long day trip, but Ubud-based remains the smart play.
