Quick Facts

  • Where: Apuan village, Bangli, 30 to 40 minutes east of central Ubud
  • Entry: Around 20,000 IDR
  • The walk: A gentle 10 to 15 minute path with steps and palm-lined bridges, one of the friendliest approaches on the list
  • Swimming: Yes, properly. A deep, calm pool under a single clean curtain of water, and the best safe swim in the Ubud orbit
  • Drone: Tight jungle bowl, not worth it
  • Best window: First thing in the morning, when you'll often have the place entirely to yourself
  • The approach: The drive in passes a gorgeous coconut tree-lined road that's a shoot in its own right

The Vibe

A single graceful column dropping into a broad jungle pool, with none of the production-line feel of its famous neighbours. After heavy rain it occasionally splits into twin falls. It's the fall people mean when they say they want to actually swim under a waterfall rather than queue under one.

The Shot

Swimmer in the pool, fall behind, shot from the water's edge at pool level with a polariser to kill the surface glare. The palm bridge on the walk in is a strong environmental frame, and the coconut grove road on the approach is worth stopping for: a tree-lined corridor that shoots beautifully in early light. This is also the easiest fall on the list to shoot long exposures without bodies wandering through frame, if you make the early window.

Photo tips for Tibumana

Best timing+

Aim for 8:00–9:00am. It is usually calmer before the post-11:00am day-tour window.

Where to shoot+

The clean central curtain and pool are the hero frame. Keep the composition simple: waterfall, pool, jungle walls and one person only if you need scale.

Gear note+

A phone works well here in soft morning light. If using a camera, keep a CPL handy for pool reflections and watch the steps if they are wet.

What Recent Visitors Say

Quietly excellent ratings with a consistent theme: calmer, cleaner and friendlier than Kanto Lampo and Tegenungan, with the swim called the highlight. Visitors repeatedly describe having it close to themselves before 9am. The criticisms are mild and practical: the pool turns murky after overnight rain, changing facilities are basic, and it's no longer the secret it was five years ago.

Verdict

Fifth, and first if your priority is getting in the water rather than pointing a camera at it. On the Ubud circuit it's the natural mid-morning stop between Kanto Lampo's dawn shot and Tukad Cepung's light shafts.

Region Note

Ubud pack, two ways to play it. The classic circuit: Kanto Lampo, Tibumana and Tukad Cepung sit within 25 minutes of each other and make the definitive half-day. The slow day: Tibumana at opening, the coconut grove on the way out, then Taman Sari from the cut list for a midday swim, timed to when the sun finally reaches its pool.

Sean's Take

Get to Tibumana first thing and you have the place to yourself; that's not a figure of speech, I mean alone. Shoot the coconut grove on the way out while the light's still good, then head to Taman Sari for the swim. Taman Sari is a midday spot specifically: before then the pool sits in shade, and once the sun lands on it the whole place changes. You can also climb up behind the waterfall there to a set of pools you can swim in, and they're seriously photogenic.
