The Vibe
A multi-level wooden deck hanging off the cliff above one of the most famous left-handers in the world. By day it's surfers, coffee and a front-row view of the lineup. From 4pm the terraces fill, and by sunset on a Sunday it's the defining Uluwatu social event. It's a bar with a view rather than a pool club, and that's exactly its appeal.
The Shot
Shoot down at the break: surfers on the wave from 162 metres of elevation is the signature frame, and a 70-200mm earns its weight here. Then the sunset itself, which drops straight into open ocean with the cliffline in silhouette. Claim a rail-side table by 3.30pm or shoot standing. The Suluban cave beach below is a separate shot worth the stairs before you settle in.

Uluwatu pack. Pairs with Uluwatu Temple, which is minutes away, but pick one for sunset and do the other earlier; trying both at golden hour is how people end up watching the sun set from a scooter seat in traffic.

A must-do, no qualifiers. If you get lucky and land one of those extra spectacular Balinese sunsets, there is no better place on the island to watch it, full stop. Yes it gets really busy, but honestly that's part of the vibe; the whole cliff buzzing as the sun drops is the experience. Just get there early and claim a good spot, then let it happen.
