Indonesia wants a larger share of the wellness travel market, and the plan is broader than adding another spa menu to a resort.
The Ministry of Tourism says it is working across four areas: destination and industry standards, product development, investment, and promotion. That matters for Bali because the island already has the raw ingredients of a wellness trip. What changes next is how consistently those ingredients are packaged, explained and delivered.
What the ministry actually said
Ministry spokesperson Ni Made Ayu Marthini Nia Niscaya told ANTARA that wellness activities represented 13.35 per cent in the ministry’s 2024 breakdown of activities undertaken by international visitors in Indonesia.
That is a national figure, not a Bali-specific share. It does not mean that 13.35 per cent of Bali arrivals came for a retreat, or that wellness was the sole purpose of those trips. It shows that a meaningful portion of international visitors reported taking part in wellness-related activities while travelling in Indonesia.
The ministry’s response is to strengthen the supply side: clearer standards for destinations and businesses, more developed wellness products, greater investment, and more coordinated promotion at home and overseas.
The big number needs the right label
ANTARA, citing Global Wellness Institute research, placed Indonesia’s wellness economy at US$55.77 billion. The important word is economy. This is broader than tourism and can include areas such as personal care, physical activity, healthy eating, traditional medicine and other wellness sectors.
The Global Wellness Institute says the global wellness economy reached US$6.8 trillion in 2024 and is projected to approach US$9.8 trillion by 2029. That is the global wellness economy, not wellness tourism alone. Wellness tourism is one of 11 sectors within it.
The direction is still clear: wellbeing is becoming a larger commercial and travel category. The evidence does not support treating every large wellness-economy figure as money spent by tourists.
Why Bali is likely to feel the shift first
Bali already combines yoga, spa treatments, movement, healthy food, nature, ritual, recovery and resort hospitality in a way that few destinations can reproduce in one trip. Ubud can build a stay around classes, jungle mornings and slower days. Sanur offers sunrise walks, a calmer waterfront and easier daily movement. Nusa Dua can package wellness inside a controlled resort stay. East and North Bali can offer quieter, nature-led programmes for travellers willing to accept longer transfers.
The next step is not simply more choice. It is better-defined choice.
A serious retreat should make its schedule, inclusions, practitioner credentials, accommodation standard, transfer arrangements and cancellation terms clear before payment. A spa should distinguish relaxation treatments from medical or therapeutic claims. A wellness development should explain what is operating now rather than selling a future lifestyle through beautiful renders.
What visitors may notice
- More complete packages. Accommodation, food, movement, treatments and excursions sold as one structured stay rather than separate add-ons.
- More regional specialisation. Ubud for retreat density, Sanur for accessible coastal routines, resort zones for polished programmes, and quieter regions for nature-led stays.
- More standards language. Expect businesses to talk more about certification, practitioner experience, hygiene, safety and service consistency.
- More investment-led projects. New facilities may arrive with wellness positioning attached. Judge what is open and operating, not only what is promised.
- More content designed around outcomes. Better operators will explain whether a stay is for rest, fitness, recovery, mindfulness or simple time away instead of relying on the word “wellness” to do all the work.
How I would plan a Bali wellness trip
Start with the feeling or outcome you want, then choose the region. Do not choose a famous retreat and spend the rest of the week crossing the island for everything else.
- For a guided programme: check the daily timetable and how much unscheduled time remains.
- For rest: inspect the exact map pin, road noise, construction reviews and room position.
- For treatments: check practitioner credentials and be wary of unsupported medical promises.
- For movement: choose a base where walking, yoga, swimming or training does not require two hours in traffic.
- For value: compare what the package includes with booking the room, classes and treatments separately.
The best wellness stay may be the least complicated one: a calm base, good sleep, early movement, food that suits you and enough blank space to stop treating recovery like another itinerary to complete.
My read
If wellness becomes one of Bali’s next major tourism growth stories, it will not be defined by one new attraction. It will be shaped by businesses that can turn the island’s existing strengths into a coherent stay and prove that the experience matches the promise.
That is good news for travellers if stronger standards make retreat and spa offers easier to compare. It is less useful if “wellness” becomes another decorative label placed over ordinary accommodation.
